Bleeding is central in the life of every woman. One of the most outstanding difference between men and women is that women "bleed without dying", one that left a strong impression on the human mind, since the beginning of time. To our Stone Age ancestresses the menstrual blood was sacred. The word sacrament probably comes from sacer mens, literally sacred menstruation. Menstruation means "moon change". Being at the origin of the measurement of time, its root-syllable mens, mensis is part of words like measure, dimension, meter, mind, to mention only a few. The menstrual blood, representing the power to create life, thus connecting women to the universe, was tabu, a polynesian word meaning both "sacred" and "forbidden". In tribal societies, the menarche, the beginning of bleeding, was celebrated with a rite of passage, helping the girl enter the reign of mana: the sacred power of giving and taking life, passed on through the blood. As time went by, women forgot the art of bleeding, of flowing with life. What was sacred became forbidden, dirty, contaminated. The rule became hiding the rule. The result was that the central event in the life of every mature woman became invisible. Even "liberated" women believe their rules (that which rules them) are inconvenient and should be eliminated. The seeming instability of women is due to the oscillations that affect them during their menstrual cycle. An expression of the fluidity of life itself.
